Balloon Leg Jeans 🎈

When I first spotted these jeans about 2 months ago, I was so happy that the 80’s were making a comeback. I saw the high waist, yoke front, and balloon legs, and thought, ‘Can’t wait for Debbie Gibson to make her comeback album, too!’ Because I Get Lost in Your Eyes, anyone? Amirite?! The wider legs is perfect for the slow entry into post-pandemic living. With some extra curves from the year with Covid-19, the looser fit is so forgiving. And as much as I love skinny jeans, I have been itching for a change. These jeans are the perfect solution with an 80’s flavor ❀

Since these are a slouchy, the fitted high waist complements the looser balloon legs. It’s important that there is balance so I make sure to pair this silhouette with a fitted top. The jacket also sits right at the waist (or a cropped jacket will look just as nice!) to avoid looking sloppy. Balloon jeans are surprisingly body friendly for curvy girls on the short side as well. Will these make me look taller or slimmer? Of course not. But that’s not the point. They are cute and comfy and just a different look that can be just as flattering. Sexy may not come to mind like a good fitting skinny jean, but these balloon jeans are just too chic to not own.

When I first saw these jeans with the pleats, the voluminous legs, the “cropped” style, and how it tapers at the bottom… I was intrigued yet felt doubtful as to how this would work on a curvy and shorter frame. I didn’t buy these right away because everything I just mentioned was a basic fashion “no” for short girl with curves. But I’m a firm believer that we can wear anything we want, it’s just about balance. If it’s loose on the bottom, it’s gotta be fitted on the top. And don’t forget the pointy-toe heels, of course!

Not all balloon jeans are created equal so these are the things us Curves Petites need to look for: a high waist with front yoke to offset the pleats (staple detail from the 80’s!) and enhance the narrowness of the waist, creating length, and balancing out the extra volume in the legs. Although the jeans I’m wearing are considered a cropped length for average sized ladies, these hit right at the top of my feet… so petite hack 101: cropped jeans are the perfect “normal” length for gals less than 5’4”. Typically it’s advised that petites not cuff their jeans, I disagree. I believe a narrow cuff that hits right at the ankle highlights the elegance of the narrowest part of the leg, which gives you an elevated look that is so tailored and chic. A medium/dark wash is best as well because the darker bottoms draw the eyes up, creating an illusion of height.

Again, I can’t emphasize the importance of balance. To avoid looking sloppy, make sure the top is fitted. Our average and taller sisters can wear a looser fitting top, but it will just make us look like all the material is swallowing our petite frame and wider because we are curvy. Pointy shoes are very important as well to help elongate our shorter legs. The built-in benefits of the a balloon pant is the roomier fit in hips and thighs, which is a curvy girl’s dream.

So if you’re curvy yet petite, you can definitely rock this new silhouette in jeans. These were only $25 and an affordable way to add this style to your wardrobe.
